[info] Polypterus endlicheri endlicheri

I came to this, because of Kerry.

For my curiousity on why Tsuyo picked the fish for his project name. I also would like to know about all his project theme.

Polypterus endlicheri endlicheri (poll-it-terr-us end-lick-err-eye end-lick-err-eye). --> So, it's really a fish name. I wonder why Tsuyo made it double before.. apparently the origin name is double indeed.
Origin from Africa, Nigeria mostly but this site also mentioned Indonesia breed (I've checked, we can find it easier here and quite cheaper too ^o^. Other names are Ikan naga, ikan Palmas).
A big big size fish; 30cm/12" in length sometimes over 45cm/18". Cost quite expensive since it's imported too.

Habitat: This fish lives in muddy and weedy streams, backwaters and swamps, and has also been recorded in mangroves. It is capable of air-breathing, thanks to an auxiliary respiratory organ, and can withstand very poor water conditions, making it an easy fish to keep in the aquarium. --> just my poor analysis.. perhaps this is one of the reasons why Tsuyo choose the fish. What I mean is related to his panic attack (Hyperventilation syndrome). He wants to be like the fish, can survive is the bad condition.

Stocking: Polypterus can be kept together, but they are territorial and may bite each other. Their tough armour plating prevents much real physical damage occurring, but for a more peaceful aquarium, it's best to stick to a single specimen unless you have an enormous tank.
Aquarium: Polypterus are pre-historic fishes and have ganoid scales. This makes them less 'bendy' than other fish, so they can find turning around in narrow tanks a little difficult. For an adult endlicheri, you ought to provide a tank of at least 120 x 60 x 60cm/48" x 24" x 24", preferably larger - the wider the better. --> Remembered from Utaban 2006.11.30, he said his living room was surrounded by fish tanks, huge ones. Can imagine how big is his house?

Notes: These fish can jump out of the aquarium if startled, so use a tight fitting cover. --> Reminds me of the Fukanzen clip menu.

>> Lighting is not overly important unless you opt for live plants. Being mainly nocturnal, the fish are likely to prefer dim lighting, although juveniles in particular do not appear to be bothered by brighter light at feeding time. It may be worth fitting the tank with one of the blue ‘moonlight’ fluorescent bulbs for an hour or two of evening viewing. Using a timer, this can be set to come on just before the main light goes off, to give a more natural transition to twilight. Increased activity is likely to be observed when the tank is dimly lit, such as from background light in the room. --> Kerry made a great water tank for Funky White Dragon. He really took it all *clap clap*
